The Castillo de Santa Ana
Originally built in the fourteenth century to protect the local salt production, the castle had been subjected to attacks from the Turkish fleet, earthquakes and explosion caused by lightning strike! However in 1997 restoration commenced and now it performs an important role as a three floor exposition centre for the town. On the ground floor there is a large area for topical expositions which in 2014 was focused on the work of a local photographer on images of the Spanish army in Afghanistan. The second floor has multi-media displays showing the history of the area and its development including an explanation of the intensive horticulture. |

This is an aerial view of Roquetas showing an area of about 30 sq. miles. All the white area is the local plastic greenhouse intensive horticulture industry. This has developed massively over the last decade, contributing significantly to the region from an income and employment viewpoint. As you can see it must cover over half the area and is a major exporter of fruit and vegetables to Europe including Britain. |
