Nerja is an attractive little resort about 52kms east of Malaga and is quickly reached on the autovia del Mediterraneo. It`s the main tourist resort at the eastern end of the Costa del Sol and is largely unspoilt. The town has accommodation for a large number of visitors, but it has kept its own Spanish character. The shoreline is a series of interesting coves formed by the majestic cliffs and sheltering an array of lovely beaches. The backdrop scenery is formed by the stunning Sierra Almijara with several impressive mountains. A combination of this protection from the northern winds and the influence of the sea gives an excellent climate which has secured its popularity with holiday-makers. |

A famous centrepiece of the town is the Balcon de Europa on the seafront in the centre of the town. It is a very pretty promenade with arches on one side and restaurants and hotel on the other. All leading down to the sea and a circular viewpoint on top of the cliffs. The sun-set is phenomenal over the mountains in the west. |

At the other end of the promenade is the plaza Carmen with the Church of El Salvador and the Ayuntamiento. This is a typically sleepy Spanish square with shaded bars to watch the world go by. It bursts into life when the congregation pour out of Mass at El Salvador. The town has a significant number of restaurants, bars and hotels to suit all tastes and pockets. There are excellent Andalusian bodegas for the traditionalist, to a whole variety of international cuisine. |

There are some good beaches in Nerja on the Costa del Sol and Burriana is certainly one of them. It serves the population of local apartments and hotels as well as discerning visitors.Sheltering between headlands it is always warm and inviting. There is the added benefit of Ayo's famous paella eatery on the adjacent promenade - not to be missed! This is a shot from the Parador hotel showing its unique position on the seafront overlooking all the action. |

Restaurant Merendero Ayo
One of the best paellas on the Costa del Sol has been served up for forty years at Ayo`s. Situated on the excellent Burriana beach, Ayo cooks huge paellas over wood barbecues all day long. The restaurant is always packed but you still seem to be able to find a table. On a hot day on the Sol, the thatched roof provides welcome shade as you enjoy your meal. Don`t miss this great experience! |

Perhaps an unusual feature of Nerja is the large number of pleasant housing developments surrounding the town. Tourists are exceptionally well catered-for, in districts like El Capistrano, which is a pretty beach side development next to Burriana playa. It was built in typical Andalusian style, like the rest of town, but with lots of variety and many leisure facilities to ensure a great holiday break. For golfing enthusiasts, there is a course right next to the development. |
