The most central beach is at Cala Gran which is the largest in the town at 40m x 100m, but still not massive by any means. The sea is a wonderful light blue colour, very clean and the beach is well maintained.

The next beach you come to, is Cala d`Or itself, which is a smaller cove fringed by pine trees. Both beaches get quite crowded in the season but if you arrive early or late you can usually find space to put your parasol and towels. There are many hotels and supporting shops at the northern end of the resort with concentrations of various nationalities. Many of these are gathered around other smaller beaches. Overall Cala d`Or has been developed in a sensible manner to protect it from the rowdiness of some other resorts in the Mediterranean. However the chances are that you will feel the need to hire a car to explore the rest of the island. |

A visit to the capital, Palma, is an absolute must, it is the commercial and culture centre of the island. It`s history extends back to Roman times and artefacts from that period are still dug up under buildings in the old quarter of the city.Approaching from the east the Autopista de Llevant goes into the city along the sea front. You will see the magnificent 14th century gothic cathedral Sa Seu in an elevated position on the right. The inside of the cathedral is impressive with a variety of decorative side chapels dedicated to various saints. Some of the stained glass windows are breath-taking in their beauty, especially the vibrant rose window at the end of the nave. It is one of the tallest Gothic structures in Europe and you can believe it! Es imprescindible visitar la capital, Palma, que es el centro comercial y cultural de la isla. La historia de la isla se remonta a la época romana y se desenterra todavía artefactos de aquél período bajo los edificios en la parte vieja de la ciudad. Llegando a la ciudad del este en la autopista de Llevant se entra la ciudad al lado del mar. Así se verá la magnífica catedral gótica del siglo XIV, Sa Seu, en una posición elevada por la derecha. El interior de la catedral es impresionante con una variedad de capillas laterales decoradas y dedicadas a varios santos. Look for the underground parking on the right hand side just before this landmark next to the Parc de la Mar. You can exit the parking directly into the Parc and walking alongside the lake in the direction of the town, you get stunning views of the cathedral. Take some photos here. As you leave the Parc don`t miss the Jardins de s`Hort del Rei on the way to the Cathedral. Attached to the cathedral there is an interesting museum with all kinds of artefacts to see. |

Near to the cathedral is the old town where you can really get a feel for life centuries ago.Walking back towards the centre of town, there is a great choice of shops along Calle Conquistador, Santa Domingo and Jaume II. These lead to the impressive if rather fly-blown Placa Mayor which houses the usual selection of bars and restaurants. From here you can take a stroll up the tree-lined Passeig de la Rambla, which is very pleasant. Alternatively, you can head west past Placa Weyler with its modernista Gran Hotel now a free art gallery and the fascinating facade of the Forn del Teatre pastry shop (join the queue for a wonderful pastry) next to the old Bar Central. Keep walking along Calle Unio until the Placa Rei Joan Carles I, a bustling square with some more good shops. Take a quick detour down avinguda Jaume III to see the elegant Loewe shop and its upmarket fashions.Then return to the Placa and turn down the tree-lined Passeig des Born to visit the hip Zara and its offerings for the modern family. If it`s getting near to a meal time there are a selection of good tourist restaurants in this area just along the Avenida Antoni Maura which have outdoor eating backing onto the pretty Jardins s`Hort del Rei. The great advantage of these are that they are only a stones throw away from the underground parking at the Parc de la Mar. |
Cerca de la catedral se encuentra el pueblo viejo donde se puede sentir una vida de siglos atrás. Regresando hacia el centro del pueblo, hay una variedad de tiendas por Calle Conquistador, Santa Domingo y Jaume II. Éstas llevan a Plaza Mayor, una plaza impresionante, pero un poco de mala muerte, que tiene una selección de bares y restaurantes. Desde aquí se puede pasear por el Passeig (Paseo) de la Rambla que está bordeado de árboles y es muy agradable. O, se puede caminar al oeste a Plaza Welyer con su Gran Hotel modernista que ahora es un museo de arte gratis y además hay la fachada fascinante del Forn del Teatre (Horno del Teatro) con su tienda de pastelitos (póngase en la cola por una masa estupenda) al lado del viejo Bar Central. Sigue caminando por Calle Unió hasta la Plaza Rei Joan Carles I, una plaza animada con unas tiendas buenas. Da un rodeo por avenida Jaume III para ver la tienda elegante de Loewe con su moda de categoría. Después, vuelva a la Plaza y baje el Passeig des Born, bordeado de árboles, para visitar la moderna Zara con su ropa para toda la familia. Si es casi la hora de comer hay una selección de restaurantes turísticos en esta zona a lo largo de la Avenida Antoni Maura donde se puede comer fuera, cerca de los jardines bonitos, s`Hort del Rei. Otra ventaja es que están cerca del aparcamiento, el Parque de la Mar. |

On Thursdays what seems like the whole town is given over to hundreds of market stalls selling everything you could imagine. It is also the centre of the island's leather production and offers the whole spectrum from jackets to bags, shoes and a myriad of other stylish goods. You can get some good bargains here and that�s why what seems like half the island turns up on Thursdays! Be prepared to pace yourself, stop for refreshments often, it`s a long walk through all the stalls. |

Además es el centro de la producción de cuero de la isla y ofrece una amplia gama de chaquetas hasta bolsas, zapatos y otros productos de moda. When you have had enough of trudging the market stalls and just want to chill out on a beach, there is a great place to try. It`s a trek but worth the effort to drive straight back down the autovia linking Inca and Palma to one of the beaches at C`an Pastilla or Las Maravillas on the east side of Palma. These are fantastic stretches of wide clean beach bordered by a good selection of restaurants and cafes. Soak up some sunshine and relax on the sand then stroll along the promenade and enjoy choosing somewhere interesting to eat. |
Cuando está harto de caminar entre los puestos y quiere solamente relajarse en la playa, hay un sitio perfecto a visitar. Está un poco lejos pero vale la pena bajar la autovía entre Inca y Palma hasta una de las playas a C`an Pastilla o Las Maravillas al este de Palma. Aquí hay trechos de playas limpias y fantásticas bordeadas de una buena selección de restaurantes y cafeterías. There is a great finale to the visit when everyone is seated in an auditorium facing the large underground Lake Martel. Rowing into view is an illuminated boat with musicians playing haunting concerto classics, a truly memorable climax to a unique experience. A final treat is being rowed along the lake to the route leading to the exit. |

There are a number of visits the tour reps try to attract tourists to take, but we only tried the "Pirates" show in a club on the outskirts of Magaluf. This proved to be an enjoyable evening being entertained by the cast of multi-talented pirates who sang, danced and gave breath-taking acrobatic displays all night long. Dinner and wine is included and the waiter service is very attentive. |

Era una noche muy divertida y nos entretenía un reparto de piratas talentosos que cantaron, bailaron y hicieron acrobáticos increíbles durante toda la noche. For groups of young people, the resorts of Magaluf and Palma Nova are much livelier than most other parts of the island but can be overly raucous. The tour rep said that most reps do not want to work in these spots because there are so many problems caused by the poor behaviour of some visitors. This may be unfair criticism but there is so much to see in other parts of the island we did not visit the resorts at all. |

Overall Majorca is a wonderful island and ideal for a warm sunny holiday. Much of the island is unspoilt by the mass tourism of recent years and retains its delightful mallorquin heritage. It is to be recommended to anyone who enjoys the spanish culture and mediterranean joy for living. Palma airport is strict with its policy of fines for over-weight suitcases, so check this before you leave for the airport. |
En conclusión, Mallorca es una isla maravillosa y ideal para vacaciones soleadas. Mucho de la isla no ha sido contaminada por el turismo de masas en los últimos años y conserva su patrimonio mallorquín precioso. Recomandaremos Mallorca a los que les gusta la cultura española y la alegría mediterránea para la vida.
