CHRISTMAS IN SPAIN
| Christmas in Spain is an important religious holiday season starting on 8th December with the feast of the Immaculate Conception. There are many important celebrations throughout the country epitomized by the renown service of Los Seises (the dance of six) at Seville cathedral. |  |
Navidad en España es una importante fiesta religiosa temporada a partir del 8 de diciembre con la fiesta de la Inmaculada Concepción. Hay muchas celebraciones importantes en todo el país caracterizado por el famoso servicio de Los Seises (la danza de seis) catedral de Sevilla. |
| Also a major pre-occupation of Spaniards on the 22nd of December is the drawing of El Gordo – the mega lottery with prizes totaling more than a billion euros. The tickets are sold in such a way that there are many winners of prizes, so everyone`s attention is focused on the media coverage of the draw. The search for the winners and the shops selling the winning tickets, almost becomes a national pastime! |  |
También una pre-occupation importante de los españoles el 22 de diciembre es el dibujo de El Gordo, la lotería mega con premios por un total de más de 1 billón de euros. Las entradas se venden de manera que hay muchos ganadores de premios, por lo que la atención se centra en la cobertura mediática del sorteo. Spain is a devoutly Roman Catholic country and as such one of the most important parts of the Christmas period is the Nativity scene showing the birth of Christ. In many homes and in every city, town and village there are wonderfully decorated Belenes or Nacimientos placed in prominent public locations. There are many Christmas markets selling seasonal products from candles, decoration, gifts to sweets, flowers, and fruits. As darkness falls and stars become visible in the sky, tiny oil lamps are lighted in many window sills. |

España es un país católico romano devotamente y como tal, una de las partes más importantes de la época de Navidad es el pesebre que muestra el nacimiento de Cristo. En muchos hogares y en cada ciudad, pueblo o aldea hay maravillosamente decoración Belenes o Nacimientos colocados en lugares públicos destacado. Hay muchos mercados de Navidad que venden de productos de temporada de velas, decoraciónes, regalos, dulces, flores y frutas. Como cae la oscuridad y las estrellas son visibles en el cielo, pequeñas lámparas de aceite son iluminadas en muchos alféizar de la ventana. |
| Families have their main meal of the season on Christmas Eve, la Nochebuena. This can vary depending on what part of the country you live in. Many have a traditional meat dish like lamb with all its trimmings. Others prefer the famous Pavo trufado de Navidad which is roast turkey stuffed with a truffle filling. On the coast, like in Galicia, the meal is much more likely to be fish like cod and/or mixed seafood. |  |
Las familias tienen su comida principal de la temporada en vísperas de Navidad, la Nochebuena. Esto puede variar dependiendo de qué parte del país de residencia. Muchos tienen un plato de carne tradicional como cordero con todos sus adornos. Otros prefieren el famoso trufado de Pavo de Navidad, que es el pavo asado relleno con trufas. En la costa, como en Galicia, la comida es mucho más probable que sean peces como el bacalao y/o mariscos. |
Like many other countries, Spain had traditionally celebrated the giving of gifts on the 6th January which was the religious date for the coming of the three kings, los Reyes Magos. However in more recent times it has also adopted Christmas Day itself as another important day. It starts with midnight mass – La Missa del Gallo – the Mass of the Rooster (a rooster is supposed to have crowed when Jesus was born). In many churches throughout Spain there are impressive choirs singing carols by candlelight. The boys choir at the Montserrat monastery near Barcelona is world famous for its wonderful music. |

Como muchos otros países, España tradicionalmente celebra la entrega de regalos el 6 de enero, que fue la fecha religiosa de la venida de los Magos Reyes, los Reyes Magos. Sin embargo en tiempos más recientes también ha adoptado el día de Navidad sí mismo como otro día importante. Comienza con la Misa de gallo (Gallo se supone que ha cantó cuando Jesús nació). En muchas iglesias en toda España hay impresionantes coros que cantan villancicos por la luz de las velas. El coro de los niños en el monasterio de Montserrat cerca de Barcelona es famosa en todo el mundo por su maravillosa música. |

| Sweet items are always very popular, such as the soft or hard almond based Turron nougat bars containing honey and egg whites. The soft crumbly cakes called Los Polvorones, and marzipan figurines are also very much in demand. |  |

| We know that the Spanish like their Hogueras or bonfires, with such famous fiestas as Las Fallas and St Joan. However another long standing tradition which is not seen anywhere else, is the Hogueras which signifies the winter solstice. Especially around Granada and Jaen, the shortest day of the year is celebrated by jumping over the bonfires as a symbol of protection against illnesses in the coming year. This ancient tradition was almost wiped out by the arrival and dominance of Christianity which introduced more religion based fiestas. |  |
Sabemos que los españoles le gustan sus Hogueras, con esas famosas fiestas como Las Fallas y St Joan. Sin embargo otra tradición que no se ve en cualquier otra cosa, es las Hogueras que significa el solsticio de invierno. Sobre todo en Granada y Jaén, se celebra el día más corto del año al saltar sobre las hogueras como símbolo de protección contra las enfermedades en el año que viene. Esta antigua tradición fue casi destruida por la llegada y el dominio del cristianismo que introdujo más fiestas de religion. |
