Chichen Itza is a pre-Columbian archaeological site built by the Maya civilization in the northern centre of the Yucatán Peninsula, between Valladolid and Merida. Its name means "At the mouth of the well of the Itza".
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Chichen Itza is the second-most visited archaeological site in Mexico, drawing many visitors from the popular tourist resort of Cancún. In 2007, Chichen Itza's El Castillo (The Temple of Kukulcan) was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World after a worldwide vote.
Over the past several years, public access to the monuments has been prohibited. While visitors can walk around them, they can no longer climb them or go inside their chambers. The most recent closure was El Castillo, which was closed after a woman from San Diego fell to her death in 2006. |

Chichén Itzá es un yacimiento arqueológico precolombiano construido por la civilización maya en el norte de la península Yucatán, entre Valladolid y Mérida. Su nombre quiere decir "A la boca del pozo de Itzá".
Declarada Patrimonio Mundial por la UNESCO, Chichén Itzá es el segundo yacimiento más visitado en México, atraendo muchos visitantes del centro turístico popular de Cancún. En 2001, se nombró El Castillo (Pirámide de Kukulkán) a Chichén Itzá una de las Nuevas 7 Maravillas del Mundo, después de un voto mundial.
En los años recientes, se ha prohibido acceso público a los monumentos. Es decir, se puede caminar alrededor de los monumentos, pero no se puede más subirlos ni entrar en las cámeras. El cierre más reciente era El Castillo, que se cerró cuando una mujer de San Diego cayó a su muerte en 2006.
