OJALÁ QUE LLUEVA CAFÉ

Juan Luis Guerra

May it rain coffee in the country,
may a downpour of yuca* and tea fall down
from heaven, a light rain of white cheese
and to the south a mountain of watercress and honey
oh, oh, oh-oh-oh, may it rain coffee.
oh, oh, oh-oh-oh...
May it rain coffee in the country,
and comb a high hill of wheat and mapuey*
and go down the hill of grained rice
and continue the ploughing with your love
oh, oh, oh-oh-oh ...

May the fall instead of dry leaves
dress my harvest with bacon
sow a prairie with batatas* and strawberries
may it rain coffee.

So that there isn`t so much suffering in the small plots of land, oh man,
May it rain coffee in the country,
So that they hear this song in Villa Vasquez
May it rain coffee in the country,
May it rain, may it rain, oh man,
May it rain coffee in the country,
May it rain coffee.
  Oh....

Ojalá que llueva café en el campo
sembrar un alto cerro e trigo y mapuey
bajar por la colina de arroz graneado
y continuar el arado con tu querer
oh, oh, oh-oh-oh...
Oh, ...

May it rain coffee in the country,
and sow a high hill of wheat and mapuey*
and go down the hill of grained rice
and continue the ploughing with your love
oh, oh, oh-oh-oh

May the fall instead of dry leaves
dress my harvest with bacon
sow a prairie with batatas and strawberries
may it rain coffee

So that there isn`t so much suffering in the small plots of land, oh man,
May it rain coffee in the country,
So that they hear this song in Los Montones
May it rain coffee in the country,
May it rain, may it rain, oh man,
May it rain coffee in the country,
May it rain coffee
Oh, ...
So that all the children sing in the country
May it rain coffee in the country
So that they hear this song in La Romana
May it rain coffee in the country,
Oh, may it rain, may it rain, oh man,
May it rain coffee in the country.
May it rain coffee.

Vocabulario

These terms are local to the Dominican Republic and probably won`t show up in a Spanish/English Dictionary:

  • Yuca - edible root of the Yuca plant, also known as cassava or manioc, or casabe in Venezuela where it`s made into flatbread or boiled or fried in the same way as potatoes in the US;
  • Jarina - a `flour rain/drizzle` as when flour is shaken through a sieve;
  • Mapuey - a root used in making Sancocho, which is a sort of gumbo;
  • Pitisé; - a sort of sun-dried bacon;
  • Batata - a sweet root, not to be confused with `patata`; and
  • Conuco - small parcel of usually agricultural land.

`La Romana` is the name of a `lovely, tourist` part of the Dominican Republic.

Ombé, just means `man`, colloquially, as in `hombre.`

Los Montones is probably a farm, in the Dominican Republic.
